Given data from a random sample. You will be asked to draw an inference about the population.

Sample Question.
The data shows the responses of randomly selected 7th graders at VCMS.

Would you prefer a longer lunch or a longer nutrition?
Number of students who prefer a Longer Nutrition: 4
Number of students who prefer a Longer Lunch : 16

# Measures of Center | Stats Test Study Resource

Mean
1. Find the sum of all data points.
2. Divide the sum by the number of data points

ex.       3, 4, 7, 2, 1

1. 3 + 4 + 7 + 2 + 1 = 17
2. 17 / 5 = 3.4
3. The mean is 3.4

Median
1. List the data points in order of smallest value to largest value.
2. The number in the middle is your median
3. If there are two numbers in the middle, your median is the mean of the two numbers.

Mode
1. The value that occurs the most in the data set.

The mean absolute deviation of a set of data is the average distance between each data value and the mean.

1. Find the mean.

2. Find the distance between each data value and the mean. That is, find the absolute value of the difference between each data value and the mean.

3. Find the average of those differences.
