Philosophy & Approach

Valley Charter Elementary School (VCES) grows out of a holistic conceptualization of education. VCES serves the whole child and fosters in each student a lifelong commitment to intellectual exploration, individual growth, and social responsibility.  We embrace, celebrate and benefit from the ethnic, linguistic and socioeconomic diversity of our community by promoting family, school, and community partnerships.

VCES works to continually improve itself through research, measured data, and by providing teachers time for reflection, collaboration and professional development focused on student learning and the constructivist and project-based approach to curriculum.

Our teaching practices are founded on cognitive science research studies that have proven that a constructivist approach to teaching and learning develops a deep and long-lasting conceptual understanding in students. This form of teaching is supported by research for more than 60 years and is used in top performing schools in Los Angeles and across the country, including Larchmont Charter SchoolOpen Charter Magnet, and UCLA Lab School.

Valley Charter Middle School strives to achieve the essential combination of research-based, innovative teacher-created curriculum, parent involvement and excellent test scores. We create small, inspiring classroom environments (appx. 32 children per class) with low teacher/student ratios, and tailor instruction to the full range of educational needs encountered. We teach to the individual success of each student, and not to the test.

VCMS is a diverse neighborhood school – both ethnically and economically—and recruits its students from all neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley. We opened in August 2011 with 64 students in 6th grade and now serve 192 students in grades 6-8
