Welcome to Mrs. Ventress' 6th grade class!

What a great year this is going to be!  We have a lot to be excited about.  We will become amazing writers and even better readers. Math is going to be challenging and fun too.  We will question and solve many different types of problems.  We will investigate and problem solve through many different avenues.  I am looking forward to watching each and every student take on each and every challenge in their very own unique way.

Spelling Pattern: Compound Words

Compound words are made by putting words together.  Day and dream make daydream. Some compound words, such as hay fever, are called open compounds because the two words comprising the compound remain separate. Other compound words, such as good-natured, are called hyphenated compounds because they are made by placing a hyphen between words.  Interestingly enough, over time, separate words that are used together frequently may evolve into open compound, then to hyphenated compounds, and finally to closed compounds. Try to use compound words this week when you are writing.

This Week’s Special Spelling Practice Activity:

Compound Concentration

This week’s spelling list contains compound words.  Compound words are formed by putting two smaller words together to make another word.  For example, ear and rings make earrings.  Practice building compound words by playing Compound Concentration with a partner at home.

    1. Make a separate card for each word found within each compound word on the spelling list.  For example, the two cards for the word daydream would read day and dream.
    2. Spread the cards facedown on a table.  With a partner, take turns drawing two cards at a time.  If the two cards you draw form a compound word, spell the word aloud and then record it on a written list so that at the end of the game, you will have a written record of the compound words you were able to make (this list will be signed by your partner and turned in to Ms. V. Keep the cards in a pile and then take another turn.  If the two cards do not form a compound word, replace the cards in their original spaces and give your partner his/her turn.
    3. Continue playing until all the cards are used.

You will turn your compound word concentration list in- along with your word sort for the week and your spelling sentences for the week.  Do not forget that for homework, you must also study your spelling words for Friday’s spelling test.
